Overview

Works included the extension and refurbishment of the existing Chemotherapy Suite, the refurbishment of the ground floor of the Tower Block, and the construction of an underground car park. The new unit now links to the existing hospital via underground service tunnels and new link corridors.

In total C W Fields Son supplied over 550 bespoke doorsets across a range of fire ratings (up to FD60) and included key performance requirements such as lead/X-ray shielding.

Door facings varied between; clear Medicote lacquered crown cut oak veneer, painted paper veneer doors, laminate faced doors and PVC encapsulated and post-formed doors. Whilst the frames were provided in either; painted hardwood, clear Medicote lacquered Oak or powder coated folded steel.

The Solution

After the initial contract talks, we supplied full size mock-up doors to allow all stakeholders an opportunity to see a practical working example of the specification. This proactive approach allowed all parties to understand and agree on the design moving forward.

As many doorsets were located in high footfall areas within the hospital, it was vital to put forward a design which prolonged the period of operation. The Fields Duracore and Timbercore door constructions were used as the backbone of the FD30 and FD60 doors assemblies. In using these designs, we were able to put forward a solution which has been tested to Mechanical test severe duty Class 4 and 8 (completed 1 000 000 cycles), providing added assurance as to the longevity of service.

Where impact damage from trolleys and wheeled equipment was a consideration, Powder Coated Folded Steel frames, provided through C W Fields’ European partner, were selected as a robust solution. High impact post-formed PVC kick plates and edge protectors were also used to add further protection.

For the LINAC suites and scanner rooms the Fields X-ray Doorset coupled with oak framed lead shielded glazed screens where selected in line with the hospital specification.

Bespoke solid oak feature glazed screens were supplied to provide viewing points over the main atrium. The bespoke screens were worked for and fitted with electronic operated internal blinds to provide privacy as and when required.

Our supply also included several bespoke corridor double doorsets, which required significantly larger leaf sizes than covered within standard fire test evidence. Consequently specialist door designs were produced by our technical team and job specific fire assessments were commissioned to meet the requirements.

For added insurance, our doorsets were certified under the third party Exova BM Trada Q-Mark scheme for Fire Doors. This certification gave the architects and main contractors the confidence our doorsets were fit for purpose.
